What to Consider Before Getting Your First Tattoo

Photobucket

Making the decision to get your first tattoo is a big one because this is not something you can change your mind about once it’s done. Oh, you can do a cover up tattoo but it will be larger than the original one and if you try and laser it off you can have mixed results (just look at Angelina Jolie’s arm) since most of the ink might be removed but you can still tell something was there.

You can see the “ghost” of the old tattoo underneath the new ones.

This is not a decision to make lightly but once you do decide to get ink you then need to make your next big decision – what to get.

This is even more important than whether to get ink or not as what you choose better be something you are going to like many years down the road or you will regret it.

Don’t get something “cutesy” or on a whim because that will lead to buyer’s remorse very quickly. When you get a Kermit the Frog tat when you are eighteen it’s kinda cute but how cute will that be when you are forty?

Size and location are also important decisions. Something too large isn’t good unless the style of tattoo requires it. Location is crucial if you need to be able to cover up the tattoo for work.

This one works since the style is better in a larger scale and it is located where it can be covered up easily or shown off.

Getting ink on your face or hands is really not a good idea and a lot of tattoo artists won’t do them. Both of the artists that did my back tattoos will not do them. Necks are sort of borderline since they usually can’t be covered up. While this isn’t a bad tattoo I would have really thought about the location:

I can’t tell you that getting a tattoo won’t hurt or that it will as everyone is different and tolerates discomfort differently. I can speak of my personal experience that getting my ankle, inside wrist area and inside forearm did not really bother me or “hurt” though I knew I was being tattooed. My back, well that’s a whole different enchilada. Up by my shoulders – not so bad, lower on my back – whoa momma! You really aren’t going to know until you get the tat though boney areas will tend to be more painful for most people.

Bottom line is if you really want a tattoo make sure you think about everything from how it may effect your life to really researching the style and subject matter that you will base your ink on and if it will be something you will always want.

Tattoos that are well done are great but bad decisions lead to bad tattoos and no body likes that.

Here is one that while the art is cool I have to wonder how she will feel about this one later on in life.

Just think about what you want, where you are going to place it and who is going to do it because good ink comes from good tattoo artists and great ideas.

I’ve Been a Bad Girl

Sorry I haven’t posted in awhile but between going on vacation, getting hurt on vacation plus a trip to California, life has just been terribly crazy.

I do have a new tattoo to share so thanks for hanging in there with me and I’m back!

Photobucket

Any of my regular readers will  know that I am a nut for tattoos and have been for the last five years. I now have my fifth tattoo and it is my second larger one. I know, I know…

“Hi, my name is Delaney and I am a tattoo addict.”

I think there should be a support group for tattoo addicts. No, really…I do! Everyone that has one will tell you to your face that getting tattooed is very addicting. Problem is we don’t believe it when we hear this. I know I thought I would only get one, maybe two when I first seriously thought about being inked. We see how long that lasted!

I am not addicted to the discomfort of being tattooed. I could live without that and for the two that are on my wrist and inner arm, I hardly had any discomfort at all let alone downright pain. Now the two I have on my back? I earned those babies, let me tell you!

Each person is different and has different parts of the body that accept tattooing with little notice or that will peel you off the ceiling. My back below the shoulder blades is very touchy.

Nolan did my newest tat and he did the dreamcatcher as well. I love his art and he is a very gentle tattoo artist without a heavy hand. We decided to do the outlining and the black/gray shadings first, then come back in three weeks or so to finish up with the colors. That was the part that about did me in.

Here is a  picture from the initial session and yes, I am swollen and red:

Here she is finished but not healed up yet. I think that Nolan did a fantastic job and I absolutely love it! I did feel every single bit of the coloring in of the roses though and I will admit to being glad when it was over but I have a great piece of art for the discomfort.

I tell people that are thinking about getting their first tattoo to watch out because they are addicting but I know they won’t pay me any more attention than I did to the people that told me that. You learn it the hard way unless you are a total wimp and can’t handle the occasional discomfort.

My daughter tells me she will probably have to explain why one grandma has tattoos and one doesn’t but I’ll just tell her that I’m the artistic one. My daughter is predicting that before her baby is 5yrs old I will probably have a full sleeve. I laughed at that…at least initially then I thought “Hmm, that could be cool and interesting.”

See, she’s putting tattoo visions in my head and encouraging my addiction, but I still love her and apparently she still loves her “unconventional and colorful” mother. What more could a mother ask?

Literary Based Tattoos

Literary based tattoos are becoming very popular particularly with women. Words from novels, poems and song lyrics that speak to the tattoo owner are usually very representative of feelings, desires, hopes and/or beliefs

This type of tattoo can pretty much go anywhere on your body since the lettering can be adjusted to the area. You usually get to choose the font style so remember to choose wisely and get one that can be read easily or you defeat the purpose of this style of tattoo.

Literary tattoos can stand alone or have a more stylish flair. the choice is totally up to you so think about your design and work closely with you tattoo artist to get the best design for you and your
body.
